Southeast Drift couldn’t end 2009, a year of tremendous growth with just a normal practice event. In addition to the “Land of the Great” practice day a Tandem Competition was schedule the same night under the lights of Gresham Motorsports Park. A record pay-out of $2,000 was also offered. Drivers from as far away as NC, NJ, NV, and OH came to compete as well as many of our local Georgia and Tennessee regulars!
The “Land of the Great” practice day went off without a hitch. The staff and volunteers all did a great job of keeping the cars moving as quickly and safely as possible to ensure the maximum amount of seat time for everyone. Two courses were setup. Those registered for the tandem competition ran a course utilizing the big bank and a transition into the infield very similar to that of Irwindale Speedway. The practice only participants ran a flat course through the pit road and infield sections. Both layouts tested the drivers with a unique set of challenges.
Eventual event winner Forrest Wang makes a practice run around the huge half mile oval banking.
Practice group “A” lines up for a session on the infield course.
After the practice sessions ended and night fell everyone geared up for the main event. Unfortunately some drivers had to withdraw from the competition due to mechanical failures suffered in practice.
The Top 8 drivers assemble on the back straight.
The Top Eight had some intense battles. The Top Four drivers that moved on were super consistent and well deserving. George Grob, Andy Sapp, Nick Thomas, and Sammy Tiger were knocked out, allowing Jodin Lejeune, Dennis Mertzanis, Chanin “A” Prapapyuenyong, and Forrest Wang to move on for a chance at the podium.
Jodin Lejeune (G35) takes a high line against Chanin “A” Prapapyuenyong (R32 Skyline) to secure 3rd.
Forrest Wang (G35) and Dennis Mertzanis (240SX) ran a OMT in their battle for 1st and 2nd place.
After the smoke had cleared the announcers and staff met the drivers in front of the grand stands to announce the top finishing order.
The podium winners were Forrest Wang 1st, Dennis Mertzanis 2nd, and Jodin Lejeune 3rd.
Southeast Drift would like to thank all the drivers, the all volunteer staff, all our partners, the supportive staff of Gresham Motorsports Park, and especially all the fans for making this event such a huge success. We could not have asked for a better season closer then this! We will be picking up exactly where we left off in 2010. We have a lot in store for next season and we can wait for you all to be a part of it again!
